T *Is for Thriving (2024), by Darling-Hammond, Evans-Santiago, and forward by Sharoon Negrete Gonzalez, crystalizes resiliency and hope where helplessness and dehumanization intentions are omnipresent, at times even from loved-ones. So it is the plight of Trans* and gender creative individuals whose identities face disparagement and dismay, at so many layers of society--the religious, legislative powers, and mores and norms of intolerant, bigoted, and self-righteous individuals.

T* is for Thriving describes the path followed by so many groups who have been deprived of their civil rights to live freely, exercise their self-expression, and manifest their identity as they wish. That is, they must create incubators for social justice, cultivate social change through bravery and self-sacrifice, and most importantly, always stand up for justice against those who would do us harm. The path to self-expression of one's identity starts with affirmation, seeking social change by influencing new norms of respect and love for others through education. These aims are realized in the personal accounts of the contributors, who are experts in their fields and cogently present lesson plans that can be used by teachers as well as the layperson who wishes to be a better parent and a better person.

The testimonials' common thread is through time proven strategies of community building, affirmation of the positive self, intentional self-care, a focus on social and self-change that is driven by heart, mind, and intention and crucially, creating support systems of allies that can lead to positive institutional/social change. Just like Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed was written for the masses, T* Is for Thriving is written for those who do not need permission to self-affirm their true, innate identity--inherently at every level, to achieve transcendence.

Kia Darling-Hammond (she/they) is author of the Bridge to Thriving Framework© and co-author of The Civil Rights Road to Deeper Learning: Five Essentials for Equity. As CEO of the education and research firm Wise Chipmunk LLC, she leverages over 25 years of experience in education, research, organizational leadership, and youth development to offer thriving-focused research, advising, coaching, and public speaking, as well as designs for professional learning, curriculum development, and organizational growth.

Bre Evans-Santiago

Bre Evans-Santiago (she/her) is an author, Chair, and Associate Professor in the Teacher Education Department at California State University, Bakersfield. Her research focuses on culturally sustaining pedagogy and practices in TK–8 schools. Her award-winning book Mistakes We Have Made: Implications for Social Justice Educators (Myers Education Press, 2020) provides a vulnerable perspective on everyday scenarios and strategies for teachers of all ages to reflect upon while teaching with a social justice framework.
